Trail Riding Tips

Throttle Control for Smooth Riding: Aggressive throttle inputs on ATVs cause loss of control. Apply steady, progressive acceleration—not video game slam-and-go techniques. Smooth throttle control = safer riding without emergency room visits.

Uphill ATV Riding Technique:

  • Shift your body weight forward over the handlebars
  • Apply steady, moderate throttle (excessive speed causes rear-end lift and potential rollover)
  • Keep momentum consistent without aggressive acceleration
  • Stand on footpegs for better weight distribution on steep inclines

Downhill ATV Safety:

  • Lean your body weight toward the rear of the seat
  • Use engine braking combined with gentle brake application
  • Avoid locking brakes (causes skidding and loss of steering control)
  • Maintain lower speeds than you think necessary

Cornering Techniques for Off-Road Trails:

  • Lean your body into the turn direction
  • Keep feet on footpegs (inside the ATV frame rails)
  • Reduce speed before entering corners, not during
  • Look where you want to go, not at obstacles

Navigating Uneven Terrain:

  • When your ATV begins tilting, shift your body weight opposite direction
  • Act as the “counterweight” to maintain stability
  • Stand on footpegs over rough terrain for better shock absorption
  • Maintain steady throttle—sudden changes cause instability

Mud & Water Crossing Safety Rules:

  • Maximum depth: 12 inches (deeper water risks engine damage and getting stuck)
  • Maintain steady momentum through water crossings
  • Avoid stopping in mud or water
  • Exceeding depth limit = $75 retrieval fee (we’ll rescue you, but prevention is cheaper)

Proper Trail Spacing: Maintain minimum two ATV lengths between your Polaris and the rider ahead. Prevents:

  • Mud spray directly in your face
  • Rear-end collisions on sudden stops
  • Inability to see trail obstacles
  • Dust inhalation from riders in front

What to Bring for Your ATV Adventure

Packing Checklist

Hydration is Critical!

Heat + physical activity = dehydration risk. Bring plenty of water for your entire rental period (7 hours). There may be food trucks, but pack your own supplies for trail convenience.

Dust & Debris Protection

  • Bandanas, neck gaiters, or buffs worn over nose/mouth
  • Additional protection under helmet reduces dust inhalation
  • Creates the “off-road adventurer” look while serving practical purposes

Extra Clothing

Trails feature creek crossings and plenty of mud. Smart riders bring:

  • Complete change of clothes for post-ride
  • Waterproof bag for clean clothes storage
  • Closed-toe shoes (boots preferred)
  • Clothes you don’t mind getting permanently stained

Weather Protection

  • Poncho or light rain jacket (Alabama weather changes quickly)
  • Sunscreen (sunburn ruins the next day—trust us)
  • Hat or head covering to wear under helmet
  • Sunglasses (in addition to provided protective eyewear)

Storage Options

Many ATV models include storage compartments for personal items. Ask during orientation about secure storage locations on your specific ATV.

Respect the Equipment

ATV Rental Care Guidelines

Our ATVs are Powerful, Durable, and Expensive

We want you to push boundaries and have epic adventures—but within the equipment’s intended capabilities.

Treat rental ATVs with respect:

  • No intentional jumps or stunt attempts
  • Follow maximum water depth restrictions
  • Avoid obvious obstacles that risk damage
  • Report any mechanical issues immediately
  • Return equipment in similar condition to how you received it

Damage Fees Apply: Your $200 damage deposit covers minor wear from normal trail riding. Reckless operation, rule violations, or intentional damage results in additional charges to your card on file.

Equipment respect = future adventures. We’d love to see you back for another rental—help us keep our ATV fleet in top condition.

Legal Requirements & Fine Print

Waiver, Contract, and Rental Agreement Details

This Safety Guide is Your Preview—The Waiver is the Full Story

Think of this page as the “movie trailer” for ATV safety at Righteous Rides. Your liability waiver and rental contract contain the complete legal terms, conditions, and detailed rules.

What’s in Your Rental Agreement:

  • Complete liability release and assumption of risk
  • Detailed safety rules and trail restrictions
  • Fee schedule for violations, damages, and retrieval services
  • Cancellation and refund policies
  • Emergency procedures and contact information

You must read and electronically sign all documents before your scheduled rental date. Unsigned waivers prevent ATV rental—no exceptions.

The rules exist for one reason: ensuring you actually get to tell the story about your awesome Grand River Motorsports adventure—instead of us telling it for you (or worse, to your insurance company).
